In this small but mighty qualitative study of black women’s experiences of sexual pleasure from the Journal of Sex Research, scholars analyze sexual testimonies around the themes of emotional intimacy, out-of-the-ordinary experiences, physical intimacy, intentionality, open communication, and mindful presence. The article effectively contextualizes the research subjects’ – 25 American black women from the South between the ages of 27 and 44 – experiences of sexual pleasure as activism, resistance, and liberation. The discussion of “savoring” as a productive self-reflexive tool for processing pleasureable sexual experiences is especially compelling. This study reminds us that sex can feel – dare we say – good, and that black women experience and feel pleasure in ways that reflect their unique standpoints as social and sexual subjects.
