After the King George County School Board repeatedly changed rules to block a Gay-Straight Alliance (GSA) club from forming at the King George Middle School in Virginia, the ACLU has filed a federal lawsuit against the School Board and the principal of the middle school. The suit alleges that officials changed the rules to stop the GSA from operating while other clubs that would have been blocked by the new rules were allowed to operate.
The lawsuit is asking the court to require the GSA to form and operate on the same terms as the other student clubs. Wyatt Rolla, a senior attorney at the ACLU, said “It’s very clear under the law that the kids have the right to form the GSA club, and the School Board denied them that right because of community hostility to LGBTQ+ supportive speech…The school cannot pick and choose which student clubs get to exist based on whether they like the ideas being expressed.”
