Seattle Expands Its List of Protected Sexualities and Family Forms

Seattle’s City Council unanimously passed civil rights protections for people in polyamorous and consensually non-monogamous relationships, making Seattle the largest U.S. city to adopt such protections. Other West Coast cities, such as Olympia, Portland, Oakland, and West Hollywood have already adopted similar ordinances. Seattle’s new law prohibits discrimination based on relationship structure in areas including employment, housing, business licensing, public accommodations, park use, and policing. It extends to multigenerational and multi-parent families as well. The new legislation also expands Seattle’s civil-rights definitions by recognizing pansexuality, asexuality, and gender identities beyond the male/female binary, which flies in the face of federal Executive Order 14168 titled “Defending Women from Gender Ideology Extremism and Restoring Biological Truth to the Federal Government”, which President Donald Trump issued on January 20, 2025 (inauguration day of his second presidency).
