Olivia Wilde directs and stars in The Invite, a sex comedy and relationship drama centered on a struggling married couple, Joe (Seth Rogen) and Angela (Wilde), whose relationship is transformed after they invite their sexually adventurous upstairs neighbors, Hawk (Edward Norton) and Piña (Penélope Cruz), to dinner. The evening begins as a tense social gathering but gradually becomes a revealing conversation about marriage, desire, and intimacy, eventually leading to a proposition involving partner-swapping and group sex. The script for the film was co-written by Will McCormack and Rashida Jones, based on the 2020 Spanish film The People Upstairs. The Invite places contemporary relationship anxieties at the center of a dark comedy that takes up monogamy, repression, and communication. There is also a reportedly improvised queer kiss in the film, which film reviewer Samantha Allen references as “the closest thing to a pure escape from the malaise these characters feel”.
