Synesthesia is a neurological condition that causes the senses to link and merge. People with this condition may hear colors or taste words and more than 4% of people have some form of synesthesia. People who experience sexual synesthesia, or sexual synesthetes, may have involuntary visions of color, shapes, patterns, or even full-blown scenes when sexually aroused. Currently little is known about sexual synesthesia and its prevalence in the population, but in a recent study sexual synesthetes also reported changes in body awareness, including out-of-body experiences, or distortions in their sense of body shape, size, position, or location. Human sexuality researcher Mariëlle de Goede. Ph.D., who co-authored Yes, Please!, a book featuring research on erotic fantasies amongst the Dutch said, “People often describe it as either a trance-like experience or a psychedelic trip.” Hard Copy is looking forward to more information being discovered about sexual synesthesia.
