Neuroanatomy of the Clitoris

Neuroanatomy of the Clitoris

The clitoris is the least studied organ of the human body and didn’t appear in standard anatomy textbooks until 1995 when it was described as a “small version of the penis”. A new study is using a non-invasive imaging method with micrometer-scale resolution capability to create 3D trajectory of the nerves in the clitoris. This information will help doctors performing operations around the vulva area, such as child delivery, gender-affirmation surgery, and reconstruction surgery after genital mutilation.

Speaking of the clitoris, the upscale UK retail chain, John Lewis & Partners, introduced a line of high-end sex toys back in 2024. The toys are mainly marketed to women. The company has announced that sales of these items doubled in 2025 and will be featured in its retail magazine. The mainstreaming of sexual wellness products is a welcome development. Perhaps with growing understanding of the neuroanatomy of the clitoris will help improve the efficacy of the sexual wellness products.
