Despite nationwide opposition, the Transgender Persons (Protection of Rights) Amendment Act was passed in India. The Act revokes the legal right of transgender people to self-identify their gender and now government appointed medical boards will decide if the person can be legally recognized as trans. This has raised concerns about the potential criminalization of providing gender-affirming healthcare and is causing doctors to stop treating trans patient for fear of punishment.
