Less Sex, More Divorce, and Other 2025 Intimacy Trends

Avi Wolfman-Arent and Cherri Gregg, hosts of Studio 2, a podcast on WHYY-FM out of Philadelphia, discuss sex and romance trends with guests: Debby, Lauren Harris, and Andrew Hatherley. In this episode they talk about the sex recession and why later-life divorce is trending upward.

The sex recession is seeing less partnered sex and less sex in general all age ranges. There are several contributing factors to this phenomenon. Life/work balance, technology isolating people from social settings, and many younger adults having been brought up in “purity culture” are just a few.

While the divorce rate is dropping for younger couples, the rate of divorce for couples 50 and over is on the rise. Some cite cultural factors like longer life expectancies, wider acceptance of divorce, and women’s greater financial independence. But as people grow older together, are they simply less willing to settle for unhappiness?
