Bang My Box, a new HBO documentary produced by Sarah Jessica Parker (Sex & the City), chronicles the life of iconic New York City public access TV show creator and host Robin Byrd. The Robin Byrd Show first aired on public access in 1977 and ran for over 20 years. The late night call-in show incorporated performances and interviews with adult entertainers and experimental artists. She was an early gay rights advocate and effective promoter of safe sex in the early days of the AIDS epidemic. It was unapologetically inclusive, sex-positive, and playful and became a national platform for sex-positivity and free speech.
Co-director of the documentary, Jyllian Gunther, said “(Byrd) represents sex positivity and body positivity. She’s a gay icon, she fought for her first amendments rights, and she was a precursor to YouTube and all the platforms we have today.”
