In the wake of the mass shooting at a Minneapolis school perpetrated by a young trans woman who regretted her transition and the earlier shooting by a trans man at a Nashville religious school, the Trump DOJ is reported to be considering a proposal to declare gender dysphoria a disqualifying form of mental illness that should bar purchase of firearms. Reports that the Charlie Kirk assassin was romantically involved with a trans partner have kicked right-wing media into high gear with the same misleading narrative of trans-inspired violence. Some conservative groups have asked the FBI to add “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism” to its designation of domestic terrorist groups. According to PolitiFact, out of over 4000 mass shooting events since 2018, only seven were perpetrated by trans-identified or non-binary persons, who are far more likely to be victims of violent crime. Even the NRA has come out against the proposal!
