“Our Pleasure is Liberation” – An Analysis of Black Female Sexual Pleasure

In this small but mighty qualitative study of black women’s experiences of sexual pleasure from the Journal of Sex Research, scholars analyze sexual testimonies around the themes of emotional intimacy, out-of-the-ordinary experiences, physical intimacy, intentionality, open communication, and mindful presence. The article effectively contextualizes the research subjects’ – 25 American black women from the South between the ages of 27 and 44 – experiences of sexual pleasure as activism, resistance, and liberation. The discussion of “savoring” as a productive self-reflexive tool for processing pleasureable sexual experiences is especially compelling. This study reminds us that sex can feel – dare we say – good, and that black women experience and feel pleasure in ways that reflect their unique standpoints as social and sexual subjects.
