An attractive 19-year old Florida man lured a 28-year old man to his house and killed him with a baseball bat, then dismembered his body with a meat cleaver and saw, loaded it into suitcases and tote bags, and deposited it in a nearby marsh. Police have not released details about what the killer’s electronics revealed, but the teen reportedly had a handwritten list of people on the public sex offense registry, so it appears that his victim was chosen solely in consequence of being on the registry, in this case for an offense committed when he was himself 19 and gave oral sex to a younger boy still in high school. The killer later boasted about the act to his girlfriend, who assisted in disposing of the corpse. Despite ample evidence of premeditation, prosecutors have only charged him with second-degree murder, perhaps fearing “jury nullification” in a trial. Juries have been known to refuse to convict in such cases, because public hatred of individuals convicted of a sex offence against a child is so intense that their murder is considered socially acceptable and even praiseworthy. Perhaps the most chilling aspect of this gruesome case is that the killer has been hailed as a “Dexter” online, with the comment section of this detailed video report saying “there is no crime here.”
