The Oregon Department of Corrections has agreed to pay $295,000 (well, $200,000 will go to her lawyers…) to a transgender woman for the mistreatment she endured by prisoners and guards alike while she was incarcerated in a men’s prison. She filed her federal lawsuit in 2021 and was later moved to a women’s facility. The inmate, Zera Lola Zombie, is serving a sentence that runs to 2049. She claimed that officials housed her in conditions that put her at risk of harm. This case reflects ongoing legal and human rights debates over how prisons accommodate transgender inmates, particularly regarding healthcare and housing placements. In February of 2026 the Trump administration moved to restrict gender-affirming care in prisons, although lawsuits have been complicating the issue.
