Holy hypocrites are not limited to Christian clergy, as we reported in our last issue. The 66-year old abbot of a prominent Buddhist monastery in Thailand was arrested after it was discovered that he had embezzled nearly $3 million in funds intended for his temple, with the assistance of a 47-year old woman with whom he was filmed having sex on his dining room table. Buddhist monks take a vow of celibacy and renunciation of material possessions, but monasteries sometimes accumulate vast wealth from the donations of the mostly poor residents of Southeast Asian countries. This scandal follows another we covered in July 2025, when nine monks had sexual relations with a woman who used videotapes of the acts to blackmail them for $12 million taken out of monastery funds. Thai police have now opened a hotline for reporting “misbehaving monks.”
