EU LGBTQ Legislative Trends

EU LGBTQ Legislative Trends

Despite the Netherlands electing its first openly gay prime minister (and its youngest yet) and the Church of Norway providing an apology for the harm and pain its caused LGBTQ+ folks in its history, not all of Europe is on the same page when it comes to protecting LGBTQ+ rights and freedoms. In late September Slovakia passed a constitutional amendment limiting same-sex adoption and legally enshrining the binary definition of sex. These developments across Europe underscore the widening divide between EU member states on equality policy. Binary definitions of sex and gender are having a moment, notably in the United States where both the Trump administration as well as multiple states have moved to legislatively enshrine binary definitions of sex and gender. Why are people so committed to such binaries you ask? Normally we would send you Judith Butler’s direction to find such answers, but to switch it up a bit we’re linking you to Dr. Thekla Morgenroth’s (assistant professor of social psychology at Purdue University) presentation on this very question from a couple years ago. Check it out below if you’re so inclined my dear sexual subjects!
