The surreal phenomenon of sex toys being thrown onto basketball courts during WNBA games as of late has a new plot twist: a cryptocurrency group has come forward and claimed responsibility for starting the trend as a protest of sorts against the state of things in the crypto world. I’ll admit that upon first glance this display of immaturity and seeming misogyny seemed too trite and too idiotic for us to share with you. But Lee Escobedo, writing for The Guardian, provides some fascinating and intuitive cultural commentary on this odd trend, which he claims is demonstrative of more than “juvenile spectacle” but “the logical endpoint of a culture fluent in irony, addicted to attention and hallowed out by meaninglessness.”
