This earthly world recently lost a trail blazing social justice warrior. Miss Major Griffin-Gracy, a long time trans activist who was known as “mama” to many, was involved in LGBTQ activism since her participation in the Stonewall Uprising in 1969. She died on Oct. 13 at the age of 78 surrounded by loved ones in her home. She recently served as grand marshal at the 2024 New York City Pride March, and one of her greatest achievements was the founding of the House of gg (The Griffin-Gracy Educational and Historical Center) in Little Rock, Arkansas. The center fostered safe and soothing spaces for community members suffering from trauma. Below we’ve linked you to a short VICE News interview with Miss Major. In it she discusses some meanings/histories of LGBTQ Pride and her experience as an activist fighting for the rights of marginalized groups, particularly incarcerated BIPOC.
