On Canada’s commitment to civility, tolerance, and diversity

Nations across the globe have had to contend with Donald Trump and his unorthodox (I’m being very generous here) ways of governing the most powerful (although declining) country. Canada, in particular, has been especially tested by the menace south of its border. Francesco MacAllister-Caruso, a PhD candidate at Concordia University, makes a very important point in his article for Policy Options: Canada needs to work to differentiate itself from the United States beyond solely economic policy.  “We must embrace what our country is renowned for across the world: our commitment to diversity, fairness and justice,” he insists. Having just celebrated Pride month in June, Canada, according to MacAllister-Caruso needs to dig deep in this moment and not compromise on its commitment to 2S/LGBTQIA+ people. Trans rights and livelihoods are particularly in need of safeguarding amidst the volcanic politics of this present moment.
