A report by Outright International, an international LGBTQ+ advocacy group, reveals a global prevalence of discrimination and violence against asexuals. The report defines asexuality as “an umbrella term used to describe people who experience little to no sexual attraction toward others, regardless of their gender.” It also notes that some asexual or “ace” people describe asexuality as a spectrum. Although the asexual community accounts for a small percentage of the population, they still are subjected to discrimination, including the assumption that they are mentally ill or sexually dysfunctional. “States must respond to these human rights violations with asexual-inclusive policy and legislation,” Outright International research and program associate Venus Aves said. “At the same time, universal human rights protections and laws that prohibit discrimination based on sexual orientation should be understood to include asexual people.” Outright International also calls for the LGBTQ+ community to be asexual-inclusive.
