A team of three women from the University of New Brunswick has studied the use of sex toys in 100 mainstream heterosexual pornographic videos. They found that the toys (including vibrators, dildos, and butt plugs) are most frequently used by the male partner to enhance the pleasure of the female partner, but are often also depicted as controlled by the woman herself. In more than half the depicted uses, they induce female orgasm. To the extent that pornography models what viewers come to regard as normative sexual practices, the emphasis on creating female pleasure is healthy, and may even serve a positive educational purpose for those not yet familiar with using these instruments, which as we have noted before, are increasingly popular as high-end merchandise marketed to women even in prestigious department stores.
