How culturally tone-deaf can one Canadian institution of higher education be? Very, apparently. Check out what women’s, gender, and sexuality studies faculty and students are facing at Canada’s third-largest university in this interview by Jes Mason for Toronto Life. Frances Latchford, a fierce academic at ground-zero of this developing sh*t storm, provides her insight:
“…I can’t blame everything on the university administration—they’re operating in a context created by a succession of governments that have dismantled what a university is supposed to be. Historically, the provincial government funded universities at a much higher level. When I went to university back in the ’80s, a post-secondary education was considered a social good in and of itself—not just something that will help you get a job.”
