Our beloved state legislators in the US continue to distinguish themselves by silliness when it comes to sex and gender. An Arizona legislator has proposed a bill to make it a felony to bring a minor to an event where people may be dressed in drag. A state senator in Illinois has introduced a bill to classify trans identity as a “mental illness”. In Kansas, a bill would revoke the driver’s license of anyone who identifies as other than their natal sex.
None of these bills are very likely to pass, but of more concern are the silly laws that already exist in some states, such as Nebraska, where sex among consenting adults is illegal if one of them is a teacher and the other has graduated from high school less than 90 days ago. A 26-year old wrestling coach now faces 20 years in prison because he first had sex with his girlfriend only 69 days after her graduation. They did not date or socialize during the time she was still a student, but assumed it was OK after her graduation.
