You’ve heard of the little blue pill, but have you heard of the little pink pill? Although there are currently 26 drugs approved to address sexual dysfunction in men, only one drug has been approved to address the issue in women. A new documentary, The Pink Pill, looks at the struggle to get the female libido drug flibanserin (sold under the name Addyi) approved and marketed. The drug is indicated for women with Hypoactive Sexual Desire Disorder (HSDD), a neurological condition that causes low libido. Critics say the drug has too many potentially serious side effects – though it must be noted that those side effects are not much different from those of Viagra. Scrutiny of clinical data to ensure drugs are effective and safe is critical to public health but it just may be the lack of data regarding the physiology of women’s sexual experience and outdated social attitudes about female sexuality that have been the major roadblocks.
