Trans Recognition Advances Globally

Despite political retrenchment in the U.S., recognition of trans and non-binary rights has scored some major victories on the international stage. The United Nations Commission on the Status of Women overwhelmingly rejected a U.S. proposal that gender be defined in strictly binary terms. Only Pakistan and Chile voted in favor of the U.S. proposal, which was put forward on the last day of the commission’s meeting in March.

And the Romanian courts have finally brought that country into alignment with the 2024 decision of the EU Court of Justice that all EU member states must recognize reassignment of gender identity in any other EU state. The case concerned a trans man who was a dual citizen of Romania and the UK, where he had undergone gender transition in 2020. Romania had delayed recognizing his status due to the UK’s later exit from the EU, but the man’s two-year legal battle has finally been resolved in his favor, and Romania will change his birth certificate to reflect his current identity. However, Romania still does not recognize same-sex marriages or legal partnerships.
