Closer and Closer to The Handmaid’s Tale?

As Hard Copy reported in January, much of the fight over reproductive rights is currently being fought in the courts and legislatures. There is not strong support for abortion bans and restrictions from voters so anti-reproductive rights activists must go through legal and legislative channels. While some states are looking to make it harder for women to access care other states are looking to expand access. Interestingly, even with the current state bans and restrictions the number of abortions performed in the US has not changed.

In a recent case, Georgia has charged a woman with murder after police say she took abortion pills to end a pregnancy. A conviction in this case could set a dangerous precedent. However, during a bond hearing, superior court judge Steven Blackerby said that he thought the charge to be “extremely problematic”, adding: “I have concerns that the state would ever be able to secure a conviction of malice murder.”
