The French Institute of Public Opinion surveyed 1,011 women aged 18-29. Only 38% felt that sex was very important, compared to 62% in 1990, and half said it was not that important in their lives. 62% of women aged 20-24 said they sometimes felt bored during sex, compared to only 42% in 1996. The authors of the survey found that young women today were more likely to satisfy themselves with masturbation and sex toys. Not addressed in the study, but probably a factor, is the increased absorption of this generation in digital media as opposed to in-person social engagement. Also worth considering when contrasting generational attitudes toward sex is growing media emphasis on the ubiquity of male aggression, sexual assault, and partner abuse.
