Why the human penis is unusually large compared to that of other primates is a long-standing evolutionary question. A group of Australian evolutionary biologists and psychologists have studied this question by using computer-generated images to assess female evaluation of male sexual attractiveness and males’ evaluation of a potential rival’s fighting ability and attractiveness to females. Shoulder to waist ratio (i.e. a V-shaped as opposed to a pear-shaped body) and height were the most prominent indicators, but penis size was also highly significant, suggesting that having a larger penis gave certain males an edge in reproducing and hence was a trait of evolutionary selection.
