The striking workers are pushing back against their status as independent contractors and are demanding salaries. As contractors, clubs usually required that workers pay a “bar fee” to work at a club for an evening which can sometimes be as much as the dancers make. Not all sex workers agree with this new model saying that being employees would take away the flexibility and autonomy that they currently enjoy.
