Authorities investigated the claim and carried out forensic interviews with the children. They instructed that Buttigieg was not to be alone with them until the investigation was completed, though Michigan State Police quickly determined the allegations were unfounded. In his Substack post, Buttigieg described the ordeal as “among the darkest hours of [his] life,” saying he was devastated that his children were drawn into what he believes was a politically motivated attack. According to the National Coalition for Child Protection Reform (NCCPR), such harassment – likely exacerbated by Buttigieg’s gay identity – is indicative of the urgent need to reform child abuse reporting laws in the United States.
