A Dutch research team has explored the level of sexual satisfaction among 100 adults aged 56 and older, all of whom had transitioned at least 10 years earlier (most of them 20-30 years earlier). This group allows us insight into the long-term effects of gender transition on people’s sexuality. 52% of the trans men said sex was important to them, but only 25% of trans women. 42% of trans men reported satisfaction with their sex lives, and 29% of trans women did so. Unfortunately, the study did not include an age-equivalent control group of cis adults, but it should be noted that asexuality is much more common among trans people of all ages even prior to surgery. The most common problem reported by both trans men and women was difficulty in seeking and initiating sexual contacts, or even fear of doing so due to shame over one’s sexual self or post-operative genitals. Additionally, trans women reported difficulty in arousal, orgasm, and pain during sex. Post-operative complications were a problem for many.
