The Economist/YouGov conducted a demographically weighted poll of 1,623 U.S. adults in late October, that revealed 54% support for the legality of gay marriage, compared to 33% opposition. While this is still a solid majority, it is substantially down from the 70% level of support in a 2021 Gallup poll. Most of the decline comes among Republican voters, who appear less tolerant of LGBTQ rights in today’s hyper-polarized environment, where trans issues in particular have come to the fore as central foci of partisan contention.
