Two American Anti-Trans Bills Will Move To Senate

The Trump administration and the Republican party at large have ratcheted up their efforts to dismantle gender affirming care for youth. This effort comes in the form of two bills that recently passed through the House of Representatives. The first, a la representative Marjorie Taylor Green, criminalizes parents and healthcare providers who facilitate gender affirming care for those under 18 years of age. Through executive orders and scare tactics the Trump administration has already been targeting those who provide such care to trans kids, but this bill marks the first piece of legislation that enforces anti-trans sentiments via criminalization. The second bill, introduced by representative Dan Crenshaw, bans Medicaid coverage of gender-affirming care for youth. It is predicted that neither of these bills will pass through the Senate. Regardless of the outcome, the affront on trans people’s livelihoods is likely not going cease anytime soon. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), for instance, sent warnings to several chest binder companies in mid-December threatening “regulatory action” because these companies had not registered their products as medical devices, putting them in conflict with federal law. Such binders are chest-flattening products that transmen and some nonbinary folks commonly use. It’s worth noting that corsets, spanx, and other products that manipulate bodies for aesthetic and often gendered purposes have not drawn the same attention from this administration.
