Uganda Bill Criminalizes Identifying as LGBTQ+

Uganda, already one of the world’s harshest anti-gay regimes, is introducing a new bill which would impose up to 10 years in prison for simply identifying as LGBTQ. In 2023 the Ugandan president, Yoweri Museveni, signed into law the “Anti-Homosexuality Act” which brings the death penalty to anyone involved in “aggravated homosexuality”. Prior to that, homosexual activity was already punishable by life imprisonment. The new proposed bill criminalizing mere LGBTQ+ identification marks a chilling escalation of state-sponsored homophobia, representing a severe violation of fundamental human rights and personal autonomy. This development illustrates the ongoing global struggle over Sexual Democracy and Sociopolitical Justice and Activism, as authoritarian regimes weaponize identity to consolidate control and reject Western influence.
