Two young men aged 20 and 21 were recently whipped in the same park where they were caught kissing and hugging in a bathroom by police in April. This happened in Indonesia’s conservative Aceh province – the only province in the country where Sharia law is still practiced. The men initiated contact with each other on an online dating app before meeting up. Eight other people were flogged that day (adultery and gambling) in front of a crowd of about 100 people. This story is a loud reminder that sexual democracy should not be taken for granted in this world. Below we’ve linked you to something to help cleanse your palette of said injustice. It’s an interview from The Agenda that features Marcus McCann – a Canadian human rights lawyer – discussing his 2023 book Park Cruising: What Happens When We Wander Off the Path. In his book McCann suggests that we should embrace public spaces for such connections. Give it a peek my dear sexual subjects!
