In an unprecedented move, the Trump administration filed subpoenas in June on normally confidential patient data from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia and nearly 20 other physicians or clinics that provide gender transition services. This action was justified by Attorney General Pam Bondi as necessary for the investigation of “healthcare fraud.” The information included names, addresses, and social security numbers of minor patients who had been prescribed puberty blockers or hormones, as well as information about the medical providers and their insurance billing practices. This appears to be part of the administration’s broader campaign to harass and intimidate the dwindling number of clinics that still offer such services to minors.
