An international team of clinicians and methodologists chosen for their impartiality on the politics of transgender medicine examined the most recent Standards of Care (SOC-8) published by the World Professional Association for Transgender Health, which is referenced as the authoritative framework governing best practices in this field and is often cited in court cases, insurance decisions, and policy debates. They rated the document using the most common instrument for evaluating medical practice guidelines, the Appraisal of Guidelines for Research and Evaluation (AGREE II), and found that it had serious limitations in clinical applicability, editorial independence, and rigor of development. SOC-8 was criticized for lack of transparency about conflicts of interest among its authors, opaque methodology in selecting evidence, and failure to link evidence to actual recommendations. Only 2 of the 8 assessors recommended its use without modifications.
