New Contraception on the Block

Vasalgel is a non-hormonal and long-lasting male contraceptive that has just entered human clinical trials. It works via an injection into the vas deferens, aka the “sperm duct”, a long, muscular tube that transports sperm from the epididymis to the ejaculatory duct and urethra prior to ejaculation. Vasalgel blocks sperm while allowing other fluids to pass. Unlike vasectomy, the injection is reversible in a simple procedure. Although final approval of Vasalgel is years away, it would be a welcome addition to limited contraception choices that place the onus of responsibility of pregnancy prevention on women. It also provides a second layer of protection for men who are unsure of their female partner’s consistency in birth control. We’ve certainly come a long way since “coitus interruptus” my dear sexual subjects, eh?
