Josh Silver’s debut adult novel, Fruit Fly, is a dark but moving psychological thriller that unpacks questions of authorship, identity, and privilege when it comes to telling marginalized communities’ stories. The story follows a straight female author who poses as a gay man online and then stalks a gay male addict in order to mine his experiences for her next book. The highly praised book has been prompting productive discussions during Silver’s book tour, raising ethical questions about cultural appropriation and authenticity in publishing. Silver believes that writers should have creative freedom to write beyond their own identities, although he points out that intentional research and meaningful engagement with the communities being depicted are essential. Interestingly enough, Silver drew from his own experiences as a gay man and recovering addict to concoct a story about a straight female writer who also draws from experiences of queerness and addiction to write a book…they just aren’t her own experiences.
