Testosterone Does an Army Good?

Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth is proposing to create a “High-T” military by introducing annual testosterone screenings for U.S. service members aged 30 and older, with voluntary testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) offered to those diagnosed with low levels of the hormone. TRT is a medical treatment for those with hypogonadism, which can cause symptoms such as fatigue, reduced muscle mass, low libido, depression, and decreased bone density. It’s important to note that experts caution that testosterone levels naturally fluctuate, and so routine population-wide screening could lead to unnecessary treatment, which carries risks, including infertility, blood clots, stroke, worsening sleep apnea, and even acne. Research has shown that TRT has benefits for people with hormone deficiencies, but does not reliably improve strength, cognitive performance, or endurance in typically healthy individuals with normal testosterone levels.

So what’s sparked this bright idea of Hegseth’s? One way to understand Hegseth’s worldview is through his religious beliefs and affiliations. In this rather astonishing interview with Doug Wilson – Hegseth’s pastor – by Uncloseted Media’s Spencer Macnaughton, we get a glimpse into some of the Christian nationalist ideals that are increasingly influencing politics in Washington right now. Wilson holds many controversial views, including banning gay sex and denying married women the right to vote.
