The popularity of the queer Canadian sports series, Heated Rivalry is still growing since its debut on November 28th. In contrast, the second season of Boots, the Netflix series about a closeted young gay man and his straight best friend who join the marines, has been cancelled after the Trump administration referred to it as “woke garbage.” Did Boots fail to gain a significant audience or is Netflix currying favor to help with their acquisition of Warner Brothers?
Another article about male gayness in pop culture looks at the careers of gay male pop artists such as Lil Nas X and Olly Alexander. A few years ago they were ruling pop but success has stalled. Like the cancellation of Boots, is it a reflection of what audiences want or is it the current political climate and rising homophobia?
