Perhaps most remarkable is the rise in appreciation of mature women, now the third most viewed category by men; “MILF” is the second most searched term, and the last year has witnessed a doubling in searches for “GILF” (grannies I’d like to…), “50+”, and “cougar”, as well as terms that point to a desire for naturalism, no makeup, and realistic narrative scenarios. Also notable is the steadily growing interest in LGBTQ content, with “lesbian” as the most viewed category (especially by women) and “transgender” as the second most viewed. Among gay visitors, “femboy” is now the most searched term and “twink” the most viewed category, suggesting a shift away from the muscular, hyper-masculine aesthetic that was once idealized in gay culture. Particularly entertaining is what the statistics reveal about regional fetishes, as documented by search terms: grannies are especially popular in Maine and Oregon, big women in Alaska, nipples in Pennsylvania and Delaware, feet in Connecticut, hairy armpits in Illinois, anal beads in Minnesota, and “dildo sucking” in DC, which tells us something about our orally hyperactive political class. Pornhub’s statistics, based on many millions of searches and views, are important because they reflect a broader population base than the samples used in any academic study and are not biased by socially desirable responding, a problem endemic to survey instruments.
