Despite its reputation as a favored destination for both gay and straight sex tourism, due to its permissive attitudes toward sex work and homosexuality, Thailand is in many ways still a socially conservative culture where nudity is considered shameful and taboo. Randy Western tourists, unaware of Thai customs, have in several recent high-profile cases offended Thai sensibilities by engaging in sex on the beach or in other venues where they could be observed. Although the fines for doing so are relatively modest by Western standards, being caught will result in immediate visa revocation and expulsion. Despite its natural beauty and the friendliness of its people, please don’t assume that Thailand is the Garden of Eden.
