It is hard to keep up with all the ways that the American government is threatening the livelihoods of its transgender citizens. It is hellbent on eradicating so-called gender ideology and those who promote it, but you don’t need a PhD in Gender Studies to see that the deranged bullies who are most responsible for the scapegoating of trans Americans are the biggest gender ideologues of all. They have a very specific (read: fascist) vision for how gender should be embodied and enacted by its citizens, and they are determined to eradicate those in the population who have other ideas. The Trump administration’s preferred tactic for enforcing its authoritarian dictates is the threat of pulling funding from those who do not fall in line. Its most recent attack is on the states and territories whose sex education curriculum contain “gender ideology content.” To the Trump administration, even the mere acknowledgement of the existence of transgender people is a transgression. To continue receiving funding through the State Personal Responsibility Education Program, born of the Affordable Care Act, 40 states, five territories, and Washington D.C. all were given notice by the federal government that they must remove any reference to gender from their sex education curricula immediately.
