Although a total of 27 states – in addition to the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, and more than 100 municipalities – have banned the practice of conversion therapy as well as on governmental funding for it, all mostly within the last ten years, there is growing paranoia that popularity for the pseudoscientific and downright abusive practice may resurge under the Trump administration. It’s especially noteworthy that in March the U.S. Supreme Court agreed to hear a case challenging Colorado’s 2019 conversion therapy ban on the grounds of freedom of speech, and its decision is expected next year. This is particularly alarming for the queer community because the Supreme Court refused to hear other challenges to conversion therapy bans in both 2017 and 2023.
