The University of Nebraska at Kearney (a branch campus in a very conservative part of the state) has pulled a textbook from its Human Sexuality course after a student complained that the book exposed her to “pornography.” Discovering Human Sexuality, published by Oxford University Press and lead-authored by noted neuroscientist Simon LeVay, is in its sixth edition and one of the most widely utilized textbooks in the field. LeVay said that all textbooks used in such courses show depictions of sex acts; in his words, not doing so would be “like a trigonometry text without triangles.” The Human Sexuality course is required only of students with a major or minor in Family Science or those seeking a credential as a certified family life educator. Apparently, some students and administrators think “family life” shouldn’t include sex.
