Statements that the wife of French President Emmanuel Macron was born as a man and is a “pedophile” after first becoming involved with him when she was his high school drama teacher cannot be made with impunity in France. The conflation of transgenderism and pedophilia is all too familiar, as is the assumption that all pedophiles must be men. Although she was earlier unsuccessful in a libel suit against two women making these assertions, she succeeded in a prosecution of 10 individuals for “cyberbullying,” which is a criminal offense under French law. One was sentenced to 6 months in prison, and the others were mostly given suspended sentences, fines, and mandatory cyberbullying training. She is also suing right-wing influencer Candace Owens for libel in a U.S. court. Although she could have ignored these malicious rumors, Ms. Macron felt it was her responsibility as a public figure to set an example, showing the seriousness of making false claims about someone’s sexuality or gender.
