Dr. Daniel Conway – Reader in Politics and International Relations at the University of Westminster, UK and a Research Associate at the Wits Centre for Diversity Studies, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg – participated in the 13th Annual Conference of the Sexuality Studies Association in Toronto earlier this summer. His presentation was based on research from his forthcoming book The Queer Politics of Pride: Global LGBTQ+ Activism and Homocapitalism, set to be published in November of 2025. We’ll be sure to give you a heads up when it’s out!
Pride organizations taking advantage of corporate allyship is certainly not a new topic. Queer communities around the world are largely divided on both the inclusion of corporate sponsors in their Pride celebrations as well as the involvement of the police. Conway’s research is especially important in this present moment as corporations with American ties continue to pull out of their sponsorship roles across a variety of countries, largely prompted by the (surprise, surprise!) Trump administration’s anti-DEI executive orders and funding cuts. We’ve linked you to a podcast episode that dives deep into these issues, presented by the Big Thinking Podcast and The Conversation Canada. In it Conway discusses his work with host Eleni Vlahiotis, writer and editor specializing in media, business, labour and Canadian politics.
