Although only making up 1% of the US population, the Trans community continues to be targeted by the Trump administration. The Bureau of Prisons (BOP) has released a new policy that will stop any gender-affirming medical or social transition care to transgender people. This change is in keeping with an executive order from Trump. At the same time, the closely allied Heritage Foundation—who penned Project 2025— has been pushing for the creation of a new national security designation called “Transgender Ideology-Inspired Violent Extremism”, which would designate Trans people as potential terrorists.
In contrast to the escalating attacks on the Trans community in the US, the British Columbia Human Rights Tribunal found that former school trustee Barry Neufeld engaged in discriminatory conduct through a sustained pattern of public statements targeting LGBTQ — particularly transgender — students and teachers. Under the BC Human Rights Code, Neufeld’s statements framed transgender people as threats to children or society, thereby undermining their dignity and equality and therefore were not covered under free speech.
