Reproductive Coercion Worldwide

A report from the Guttmacher Institute discusses how anti-rights groups in the US, who claim to be protecting women, are claiming that abortion pills are a form of reproductive coercion in order to support proposed bans on abortion pills.

Speaking of reproductive coercion, in the wake of the dissolution of USAID, a paper traces the genealogy of USAID’s coercive population control agenda. The paper examines how the agency has simultaneously advanced and undermined reproductive justice for accountability and African-led sexual and reproductive health rights governance. In addition, the paper argues that “Ignoring or whitewashing these narratives without ‘disinfecting them with sunlight’ allows anti-gender and anti-rights actors to manipulate and distort that history and, most importantly, undermine the work of the reproductive justice movement today.”

Understanding the varied and nuanced coercive actions that have been reported can help raise awareness of and address the harm done to many women living with HIV across the world.
