The Royal Canadian Mounted Police (RCMP) recently launched the High Risk Child Sex Offender Database. The national publicly accessible tool is a product of the High Risk Child Sex Offender Database Act brought into force on December 31, 2024. The database lists those convicted of sexual offences against children that pose a high risk of recommitting crimes of a sexual nature. The database is distinct from the National Sex Offender Registry (NSOR), which identifies sex offenders convicted of “designated sex offences” and is only accessible to law enforcement. This public resource brings Canada closer to the United States with regards to its sex offender policies. In 1996 President Bill Clinton signed the Amber Hagerman Child Protection Act Law, which created the Amber alert system and the national sex offender registry. Additionally, all 50 states and the District of Columbia currently maintain sex offender registries that are publicly accessible.
